If you’ve ever seen Whip It! then you’ll have a little bit of a clue what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t seen, well, I highly suggest that you do, mainly because it has my favorite girl crush, Ellen Page, in it.
Last night I had the pleasure of doing a tweet-up with @tigerlily13121 and @jkesner. We decided to hit up a local roller derby competition. Upon review of our local team’s bios, I was all gung ho about going because if you know me IRL, then you know that I’m a badass chick that likes to hurt people. Yeah, I said that.
We showed up about an hour prior to the show and I was already shocked at the amount of people that had come out for this adventure. It was held at a local roller rink, so unlike the movie, it was done on a flat track. There were bikers, grandmothers, parents, young children and rednecks–I honestly don’t think you could have gotten much more of eclectic group than what we saw last night.
Fishnets, spandex, high socks, rainbows . . . needless to say we were not disappointed. The picture below, which I tweeted, says it all:

We saw an older women, I’d say in her forties, wearing a black tee shirt, black shorts to her knees, and brightly colored rainbow high socks . . . and to top the cake, her hair was red. It was a sight. I was trying to figure out if this was just an excuse for some of these people to dress the way they did, but @tigerlily13121 seemed to think that’s the way they dress all the time. To each their own, I suppose!
I was hoping to see elbows, bruises, face plants, people pushed into walls, etc., but to my dismay, the skating was slow, the girls were mostly overweight and shouldn’t have been wearing the items they were, and the only reason why they seemed to be falling down was because a 5-year old is better on a pair of Fisher-Price quads then they are. We didn’t even know the score because there was no scoreboard, so honestly, I couldn’t even tell you who won, but I’m pretty sure it was the visiting team since the crowd wasn’t yelling all too often.
I will say that there was one point where one of the blockers tried to perform the infamous whip it move and had that actually happened, it may very well have made my night.
I’m not sure if I will be attending another event like this, but I suppose it never hurts to expand your horizons, right?
